Projects
LITERACY BEGINS AT BIRTH - Project
This project is a new endeavor for the League for 1999-2000. The project is
designed to teach the importance of reading to infants by new mothers. The goal
of "Literacy Begins at Birth" is to provide every newborn child in the Parkersburg
area with a packet of literature explaining the importance of reading to newborns
along with picture books for use. Both of the hospitals in the city will be
participating. As the League's focal point is "education and enrichment of children,"
this project should certainly make a mark on the young people of our community.
WHALE OF A SALE - Fundraiser
The 11th annual Whale of a Sale will be held in Spring 2000. As the largest
fundraiser for the Junior League of Parkersburg, the proceeds raised at the
annual rummage sale will benefit all League projects in the year to come. Funds
are raised by selling new and used items donated from members, sustainers, provisionals,
friends and businesses, as well as admission. The sale is for one day only,
a Saturday, and requires two full days of set up and preparation.
JLP COMMUNITY GOLF SCRAMBLE AND TENNIS TOURNAMENT
- Fundraiser
The JLP Community Golf Scramble and Tennis Tournament is an event open to the
public for women only where they can participate in and 18 hole golf scramble
or a round robin tennis scramble. This year's event will be held on Friday,
September 24, 1999 at the Parkersburg Country Club. All participants receive
a continental breakfast and a buffet luncheon. Prizes are awarded for 1st 2nd
and 3rd places in both events as well as longest drives and closest to the pins
for the golfers. Many nice door prizes are awarded at the luncheon. This event
is the only one of its kind in the area for lady golfers and tennis enthusiasts.
CHARITY BALL - Fundraiser
Annually the Junior League of Parkersburg hosts an elegant ball each spring
for the community. The event is open to the public and includes hors d'oeuvres,
entertainment and dancing. Funds raised are used to support multiple League
projects.
COOK HOUSE TOURS AND PLANNING - Project
The Junior League of Parkersburg owns and maintains the historic Cook House
as its headquarters and as a public service project. The house, donated to the
League in 1978 by Elizabeth Wolfe Eddy, past JLP president and great-granddaughter
of the original owners, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The first floor is maintained as a 19th century historical exhibit; the JLP
office is located on the second floor. Members are invited to use the house
for League meetings. Cook House tours are available to the membership and public
by appointment. In addition, from March through May, hundreds of fourth grade
students from Wood County's schools are given a historical tour and activity
book.
DONE IN A DAY - Project
The Done in a Day project is a year long effort of collaboration between the
Junior League of Parkersburg and other non-profit organizations in need of assistance.
Throughout the year the League is called upon by other groups to help financially
or for manpower. Examples of previous projects have been donating time to help
raise the roof for a Habitat for Humanity house, ringing bells for the Salvation
Army at Christmas, donating art supplies for a summer project for "at risk"
students, donating pencils for backpacks for under privileged kids or painting/stenciling
a room at the local domestic violence shelter. There is always something to
be done and always something for everyone when it comes to completing a "Done
in a Day" project.
EVERYTHING BUT THE ENTRÉE - Fundraiser
Everything but the Entrée is the brand new cookbook published by the Junior
League of Parkersburg. The cookbook is available for purchase
right now! The book is a celebration of 75 years of service by the League to
the Parkersburg community. Along with approximately 200 delicious recipes, the
book highlights 75 years of work and activities that the League has provided
to our community. The cookbook has beautiful artwork drawn by Mr. Bob Smith,
a local watercolor artist and spouse of a sustainer and past president of the
Junior League of Parkersburg. Please see our separate page
for ordering information.
